Why Learning English Seems Difficult
for Indonesian Student?
In many countries, English is the
main language. But it does not apply in Indonesia. Because, English is not a
mother language in Indonesia, so we can learn Englishin educational
institutions such as at schools or institutions of English language courses that
already exist everywhere. Then Why learning English seems difficult for
Indonesian student? They always
assume if it was difficult to learn English for Indonesian students. Does that
mean the teaching of English in Indonesia has failed?
Do you know? Noam Chomsky, American
linguist, says that when we are born already equipped with the language of the
brain called the Language Acquisition Device (LAD). So, we already have the
basis for learning any language since birth. Just imagine, a young Indonesian who
was born in London, for example, would be more fluent in English than in
Indonesian language.
Many elements that the students feel
it difficult to learn English is the existence of some problems. These problem
are:
1. Teachers rarely speak English in the
classroom. It is felt inhibited by the students because, according to them, so
they are not used to hearing people speak English.
2. Lessons are focused on grammar (and
not on the conversation), but students are rarely given guidance on how and
what the function of the elements of grammar they learn it. Based on the
results of the questionnaire and the results of tests on the students, it
appears that the average student to know the patterns of English grammar (eg
structure for the simple present tense, etc.) but, STUDENTS DO NOT KNOW WHEN

3. Taught vocabulary is not very useful
in everyday conversation. Many students have complained that the words given by
the English teacher at the school too technical nature, such as the
industrialization, reforestation, etc., while students still find it difficult
to interpret the words that are widely used in movies, magazines, and internet
sites in English. Even sometimes, students really memorized the English terms
for politics (such as Reformation, globalization, etc.) but can not say the

others). Some of the students even said that with such vocabulary is learned in

4. English learning materials in junior
high and high school are not sustainable. The students claimed that the
frequent repetition of material (such as tenses) that has been taught in junior

in everyday life is less clear.
